ChatGPT text cleaner

What the ChatGPT text cleaner does

This ChatGPT text cleaner runs one pass over anything you paste from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or Perplexity, fixing two problems at once: it strips the invisible Unicode characters the chat window left behind, and tidies the spacing around them. It is not a single-character tool like a zero-width space remover, nor a whitespace stripper that deletes every space. It is the general cleanup pass for text headed somewhere that reads bytes literally: a CMS, a slug, a spreadsheet, a config file.

It runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste is sent anywhere, there is no account, no length cap and no run limit, because no server is involved in cleaning your text.

The problem

Hidden characters and messy spacing in ChatGPT text

A reply you copy out of ChatGPT rarely arrives as plain text. The chat window renders it first, then hands your clipboard whatever the render produced: ordinary letters, a scattering of invisible Unicode characters tracking formatting, and spacing that looks normal on screen but is not built from plain space characters underneath. Both problems travel in the same paste, which is why a tool built for one leaves the other behind.

This cleaner treats them as one job. It removes the invisible characters and it also collapses the doubled spaces, stray tabs and piled-up blank lines a chat reply tends to carry, in the same click.

How it works

How to clean ChatGPT text in three steps

It takes about as long to run as it does to read these three steps.

Step 1
Paste the reply using ChatGPT's own copy button rather than selecting it by hand. That is the version carrying the hidden characters, and the one you want cleaned.
Step 2
Check the options. Normalize spaces and Collapse blank lines are already switched on. Straighten quotes and dashes is off by default because it changes visible punctuation.
Step 3
Press Clean text. The result appears in the second box, ready to copy, with your wording untouched.

The three options

What the three cleaning options actually change

Two of the three run by default. The third is opt-in because it touches punctuation you can see.

Normalize spaces (on)
Runs of two or more spaces or tabs on a line collapse to a single space, and trailing spaces at the end of a line are trimmed. A single space between two words is never touched.
Collapse blank lines (on)
Three or more blank lines in a row are cut down to one, so paragraph breaks survive but the wall of empty lines a chat export can leave behind does not.
Straighten quotes and dashes (off)
Turns curly quotes into straight quotes and en and em dashes into a plain hyphen. It stays off by default because, unlike the other two, it changes characters you can actually see.

Hidden characters

The 14 hidden characters this cleaner removes

None of these show up on screen, which is exactly what makes them worth checking for before you paste text anywhere that reads it literally.

Zero-width space, joiners and word joiner
Four characters, U+200B, U+200C, U+200D and U+2060, that take up a position in the text while rendering nothing. A joiner doing real work inside an emoji is left alone.
No-break, narrow no-break and hair spaces
Three space look-alikes, U+00A0, U+202F and U+200A, that look identical to a normal space on screen but are different codepoints underneath. Cleaning swaps each one for a plain space rather than deleting it.
Soft hyphen and byte-order mark
U+00AD stays invisible until a line wraps, then a hyphen appears in a word that never had one. U+FEFF is a byte-order mark that can land mid-document and confuse a parser.
Directional overrides
Five bidirectional control characters, U+202A through U+202E, that can reorder how text displays without changing a single letter.

Why it matters

What uncleaned ChatGPT text actually breaks

Most of these show up as a formatting bug long before anyone thinks of them as an invisible-character problem. A zero-width space inside a heading splits the keyword, so the slug and the on-page title stop matching. A non-breaking space in a shell command or a YAML file produces an error with no visible cause. Doubled spaces and a stack of blank lines make a pasted answer look uneven the moment it lands in a doc or an email.

The same characters cause EPUB and PDF export failures, phantom pauses in screen readers, and CMS fields that silently refuse to save. Cleaning first turns a whole category of mystery formatting problems into a non-event.

What this does not do

Why cleaned text can still read like ChatGPT wrote it

This cleaner works at the byte level. It does not read your sentences or flag phrasing the way the homepage checker does. A paragraph can leave this tool with every hidden character gone and every space normal, and still open with a sentence that would fit any topic on the internet.

That is a separate problem, living in word choice and rhythm rather than invisible bytes. If you want the phrasing flagged too, the homepage watermark checker does that in the same browser, for free. This tool's job stops at characters and spacing.

Who uses it

Who uses the ChatGPT text cleaner, and when

Anyone about to paste a ChatGPT reply somewhere that treats text literally rather than just displaying it.

Publishing to a CMS
Hidden characters and stray spacing both cause slug, anchor and on-page search problems that only show up after the post ships.
Writing code or config
A zero-width character or a non-breaking space inside a snippet stops it compiling or parsing, with nothing visible to point at.
Client and team documents
A reply full of doubled spaces and piled-up blank lines reads like an unedited first draft even after the wording has been fixed.
Data and feeds
Control characters and stray spacing make JSON, CSV and sitemap XML fail to parse, in ways that look unrelated to either.

FAQ

Questions about the ChatGPT text cleaner

Everything below is answered in full, nothing to click open.

How do I clean text copied from ChatGPT?

Paste it into the box, leave the two default options on, and press Clean text. The result appears on the right, ready to copy.

Is the ChatGPT text cleaner free?

Yes. No account, no paste limit, no length cap. It costs nothing to run because your text never leaves your browser.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Cleaning runs entirely on your device. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged, disconnect from the network and it still works.

Does it work with Claude, Gemini, Grok and Perplexity too?

Yes. It targets characters and spacing, not the model that produced them, so a reply copied from any chat interface is covered.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The two boxes stack on a narrow screen and the buttons stay full width.

Is there a limit on how much text I can clean?

No. There is no length cap and no run limit, since nothing is sent to a server to meter.

What is the difference between this and the zero-width space remover?

The zero-width space remover targets only zero-width and joiner characters. This cleaner removes all 14 hidden characters the engine knows and normalizes spacing, making it the broader everyday pass.

What is the difference between this and the text space remover?

The text space remover deletes every space, joining all words together. This cleaner never removes a single space between words; it collapses doubled spaces and trims trailing ones.

What is the difference between this and the watermark checker on the homepage?

The homepage checker scans first and shows every hidden character and flagged phrase before you clean. This tool skips straight to cleaning, with the same character set, but does not flag phrasing.

Why is there still a single space where I expected none?

By design. This tool collapses doubled spaces and trims line ends, it does not remove ordinary single spaces between words. Use the text space remover if you want every space gone.

Does cleaning change my words?

No. Only invisible characters and spacing are touched. Turn on the third option and curly quotes and dashes are straightened too, but no word is ever rewritten.

Does it touch smart quotes and em dashes?

Only if you turn on Straighten quotes and dashes. Left off, which is the default, they are left exactly as pasted.

Are emoji affected?

No. Zero-width joiners holding a multi-part emoji together are detected and left alone.

Does it handle Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese and Korean text?

Yes, letters are never touched. One caution: the zero-width non-joiner is meaningful in Persian and some Indic scripts, so review those flags before cleaning that text.

Can I clean code snippets?

Yes. Indentation and line breaks are preserved; only hidden characters and doubled spacing are removed.

Will this make my text pass an AI detector?

No tool can promise that. Detectors weigh how the writing reads far more heavily than invisible bytes or spacing. This cleaner fixes formatting, not prose.

Does finding hidden characters prove the text is AI-written?

No. Document exports, CMS editors and PDF copy-paste leave the same kind of residue, so a hidden character is a formatting signal, not proof of authorship.

Is there a batch mode or an API?

Not yet. For several documents, paste, clean and copy each one for now.

Can I clean confidential or unpublished text here?

Yes. Processing is local to your browser, so nothing sensitive is transmitted or retained.

Does it fix a wall of blank lines left by a chat export?

Yes. With Collapse blank lines on, a run of three or more blank lines is cut down to one, so paragraph breaks survive without the empty stretch.

Clean it before you paste it anywhere else.

One click removes hidden characters and stray spacing. Nothing leaves your browser.
