Text converter

What the text converter does

This tool takes a block of text, often pasted out of a chat assistant, a PDF or a word processor, and converts it into a plain, consistently formatted version. It always strips the hidden Unicode characters that rendering can leave behind, and you choose whether it also normalizes spacing, collapses extra blank lines, and straightens curly quotes and long dashes into plain ASCII punctuation.

It runs entirely in your browser. Paste the text, tick the options you want, press convert, copy the result. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and there is no limit on how much you convert or how often you come back.

The problem

Messy formatting in pasted text, in plain terms

Text copied from a chat window, a PDF export or a word processor rarely arrives clean. It carries doubled spaces where a layout engine used them to align something visually, blank lines that pile up to three or four in a row, curly quotes and long dashes that clash with a house style built around plain ASCII, and invisible Unicode characters left behind by whatever rendered the text before you copied it.

None of that is visible at a glance. The text looks fine until it hits a system that reads it literally: a markdown parser, a CMS field, a script expecting a specific punctuation style.

How it works

How to convert and clean text in three steps

Each option can be switched on or off before you convert, so you only change what you actually want changed.

Step 1
Paste the text into the input box.
Step 2
Choose which options to apply: normalize spaces, collapse blank lines, straighten quotes and dashes.
Step 3
Press Convert and copy the result from the output box.

The options

What each conversion option actually changes

Hidden Unicode characters are always removed, regardless of which options you tick. The three toggles control everything else:

Normalize spaces
Collapses runs of two or more spaces or tabs on a line down to one, and trims trailing whitespace from the end of each line.
Collapse blank lines
Reduces three or more consecutive blank lines down to a single blank line, keeping paragraph breaks without the extra gaps.
Straighten quotes and dashes
Converts curly opening and closing quotation marks to straight ones, and converts long and short dashes to a plain hyphen.

Why it matters

What inconsistent formatting actually breaks

A curly apostrophe pasted into a script that expects a plain one causes a syntax error rather than a typo. A run of doubled spaces defeats a string comparison expecting single-spaced text. A block of four blank lines in a row reads as an obvious formatting mistake once it is published, even though it looked harmless in the editor.

A hidden character in the same paste can invalidate structured data, break a URL slug, or make a find-and-replace silently fail on text that looks identical to what you are searching for.

Straight answer

Does this rewrite or paraphrase my text?

No. This tool only touches formatting: whitespace, blank lines, hidden characters and, if you choose, quote and dash style. Every word stays exactly as written, in the same order.

If what you actually want is different wording, a paraphrase or a tone change, that is a different kind of tool entirely, one that sends text to a server to be rewritten. This one does not do that, and it says so plainly because the distinction matters for anything confidential.

In practice

Who uses the text converter, and when

Writers use it as a last pass before publishing, to catch stray spacing and invisible characters left behind by whichever chat assistant or document tool the draft came from.

Developers and technical writers use it to convert curly punctuation into plain ASCII before pasting text into a script, a config file or a place where a typographic quote would break parsing. Editors use it to tidy blank-line spacing in a document assembled from several pasted sources.

FAQ

Text converter FAQ

Everything below is answered in full, nothing to click open.

How do I clean and convert pasted text?

Paste it into the box, choose which options you want, and press Convert. The cleaned result appears on the right.

Is the text converter free?

Yes, entirely free. There is no signup, no trial and no usage limit, because the tool runs in your browser.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Processing happens on your own machine in JavaScript. Nothing is sent over the network.

Does it always remove hidden characters?

Yes. Hidden Unicode characters are stripped regardless of which of the other options you have switched on.

What does normalize spaces actually do?

It collapses runs of two or more spaces or tabs on a line down to one and trims trailing whitespace at the end of each line.

What does collapse blank lines do?

It reduces three or more blank lines in a row down to a single blank line, so paragraph breaks stay without the extra gaps.

What does straighten quotes and dashes do?

It converts curly quotation marks to straight ones and converts long and short dashes to a plain hyphen.

Does it change my actual wording?

No. Only whitespace, blank lines, hidden characters and, if selected, quote and dash style are affected. Every word stays as written.

Is this a paraphrasing or rewriting tool?

No. It only converts formatting. For paraphrasing or tone changes, a different tool is needed, and any tool that rewrites text on this site sends it to a server and says so.

Can I turn individual options on or off?

Yes. Each option is an independent toggle, so you can, for example, straighten quotes without collapsing blank lines.

Will it touch Markdown formatting?

No. Asterisks, underscores and link syntax are ordinary characters and are left alone.

Does it work on long documents?

Yes. There is no length cap and no run limit.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, in any modern mobile browser.

Can I use it on code?

Be careful with normalize spaces and straighten quotes, since whitespace and quote characters can be meaningful in code and config files.

Is it safe for confidential or client text?

Yes. Nothing leaves your browser and nothing is stored.

What's the difference between this and the whitespace minifier?

This bundles several formatting fixes, spacing, blank lines, hidden characters and punctuation style, into one pass with toggles. The whitespace minifier does one specific job: collapsing whitespace runs.

Does converting quotes affect apostrophes in contractions?

Yes, a curly apostrophe in a word like don't is also converted to a straight one when that option is on.

Is there a batch mode or an API?

Not yet. For several documents, paste, convert and copy each one for now.

Why did my blank lines not disappear entirely?

Collapse blank lines reduces a run of three or more down to one, it does not remove single blank lines that mark a genuine paragraph break.
