The tool

What the Gemini originality checker does

The Gemini originality checker reads a passage of text and tells you which patterns in it look mechanical. You paste up to 12,000 characters into the box, press Analyze, and get back a written description of what stood out: repeated sentence shapes, hedging phrases, even paragraph lengths, vocabulary that stays flat across a long stretch.

It is a reading tool, not a database lookup. There is no index of published work behind it, no crawler and no archive of submitted essays. It cannot tell you whether a sentence of yours appears on another website. If source matching is what you need, the next section explains why the two get confused.

The confusion

An originality checker is really two tools

Search for a Gemini originality checker and you get two kinds of product wearing one name. One kind compares your text against a corpus of existing documents and reports overlap. The other kind reads your text on its own and comments on how it is written. They answer different questions and they fail in different ways.

Originality.ai runs the first kind, scanning public web content through Google search for ordinary users and adding academic journal databases and private repositories for institutional ones. DetectGemini runs the second kind, and says so plainly: it analyses patterns, perplexity and burstiness, and compares your text to nothing at all.

This tool is the second kind. Knowing which one you hold matters: a clean pattern read says nothing about copying, and a clean corpus match says nothing about whether a model produced the text.

How to

How to check Gemini text for originality in three steps

The check takes about a minute. You do not need an account and there is nothing to install.

Step 1. Paste the passage
Put the text in the input box. The limit is 12,000 characters, and anything over that is refused rather than silently trimmed. Short samples are weak evidence, so give it a few paragraphs rather than a single line.
Step 2. Add an instruction if you want one
The optional instruction field takes up to 300 characters. Use it to narrow the read: ask about sentence rhythm only, or about whether the tone fits a technical audience, or to have the findings written as a short list.
Step 3. Read the findings, then decide
Press Analyze. The result is written prose describing what the model noticed. Treat each point as something to check against your own draft, not as a ruling. You get 5 runs per rolling 24 hours.

The mechanism

There is no watermark to read in Gemini text

Google publishes a help page on verifying AI-generated content, and it is the most useful thing on this subject anywhere. SynthID, Google's own watermark, uses invisible marks to identify images, video and audio that Google's models generated or edited. Text is not on that list.

Google also documents Content Credentials, an industry standard from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity that records where a file came from and what touched it. Google says directly that Content Credentials do not tell you whether a file is definitely AI-generated, and that SynthID recognises Google's own tools rather than everyone's.

So for text there is nothing embedded to find. Every tool ranking for this search, including the ones quoting 99 percent, is looking at surface patterns and inferring. This one does the same thing and says so instead of dressing it up.

The numbers

What a 99 percent accuracy claim leaves out

The competing pages publish figures: 99 percent, 99.5 percent, 96.4 percent, 98.4 percent. Almost none of them says what was measured, on which texts, or what counted as a correct answer. A percentage without a test set behind it is a number, not information.

Originality.ai is the exception worth reading, because it breaks its figure apart. Up to 99.5 percent on wholesale copying, 67.5 percent on patchwork plagiarism, and 41 percent on paraphrased plagiarism. The same tool, three very different results, depending entirely on what kind of case you bring it.

That last figure is the honest one and it is the smallest. We publish no accuracy percentage of our own, because we have not run a measured evaluation with a published test set, and quoting someone else's would be passing on a number we cannot check.

The failure mode

Why paraphrasing defeats both kinds of check

DetectGemini lists it among its own limitations: heavily edited or paraphrased AI content may evade detection. Originality.ai measures paraphrase matching at 41 percent. And TDMP, testing ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini against three plagiarism detectors, found that when they asked the models directly to rephrase a passage, all three produced text the detectors called original.

Three separate sources, three different methods, one conclusion: a rewrite pass breaks both the pattern read and the corpus match. Nobody selling either kind of check wants that on the front page.

It is worth knowing because it tells you what a clean result is worth. A clean result means the surface did not raise anything. It does not mean the text is original, and no tool on this search can tell you that it is.

The objection

Does this prove who wrote the text?

No, and nothing in this category does. The checker describes observable features of the writing. It never states that a person wrote a passage, never states that Gemini wrote it, and never names which model produced anything, because there is no way to know that from the text.

DetectGemini claims 99 percent accuracy at the top of its page, then concedes lower down that some human writing styles naturally resemble AI patterns and that no detector is 100 percent accurate. Its own advice is to treat a result as one data point, not proof.

If a detector score has been used to accuse you, another score will not help. Evidence of process will: drafts, edit history, notes, the version that existed before the final one.

In practice

Who uses the Gemini originality checker, and when

Writers run a draft through before filing it, to catch the flat patches where the prose stopped sounding like them. Students run their own work before submitting, not to beat anything but to see what a reviewer's eye would land on. Editors run a submission they have a feeling about and want described in concrete terms.

TDMP's test suggests a fourth use. They found that the less saturated a topic was online, the more original the output, and that on creative prompts the wording could be fresh while the structure mirrored existing work.

That reframes the question. The prompt matters as much as the model: a generic prompt on a well-worn subject produces generic text, and no checker of either kind will save it.

FAQ

Questions about the Gemini originality checker

Everything below is answered in full, nothing to click open.

Is the Gemini originality checker free?

Yes. You get 5 free checks per rolling 24 hours with no account and no card. There is no paid tier being held back.

How do I check if my Gemini text is original?

Paste the passage into the box and press Analyze. You get a written description of the patterns in the writing, which you then compare against your own draft.

Does this check my text against other websites?

No. There is no index, crawler or web search behind this tool. It reads only the text you paste and cannot tell you whether a sentence appears elsewhere.

What is the difference between an originality checker and a plagiarism checker?

A plagiarism checker compares your text to a corpus of existing documents. This reads your text on its own and describes how it is written. They answer different questions.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

Yes. This tool runs on our AI server, so the text you paste is sent there to be analysed. The widget says so above the button.

How many characters can I check at once?

Between 1 and 12,000 characters per run. Anything longer is refused outright rather than trimmed, so split a long document and check it in sections.

How accurate is the Gemini originality checker?

We publish no accuracy percentage, because we have not run a measured evaluation with a published test set. Any number we printed would be decoration.

Why do other tools claim 99 percent accuracy?

Because a single number is easy to advertise. Originality.ai, which breaks its figures down, reports up to 99.5 percent on wholesale copying but 41 percent on paraphrased text.

Does the checker tell me which AI model wrote the text?

No. It never names a model. Attributing text to a particular system is not something the surface of the writing can support.

Can Gemini text be watermarked?

Not text. Google's SynthID covers images, video and audio generated or edited by its models, and Google's own help page does not list text among them.

What is Content Credentials?

An industry standard from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity that records a file's origin and history. Google states it does not tell you whether a file is definitely AI-generated.

Will this make my writing pass an AI detector?

This tool makes no change to your text and makes no promise about any third-party detector. It describes patterns, and what you do about them is your decision.

Why did paraphrasing change the result?

Because paraphrasing changes the surface, which is all any of these tools read. DetectGemini lists paraphrased content among the things that may evade its own detection.

Does it work on short text?

It will run on a single sentence, but a short sample gives weak evidence. DetectGemini recommends at least 50 words for its own tool and the same logic applies here.

Can I check a PDF or a Word file?

No. This route takes pasted text only. Copy the passage out of the document and paste it into the box.

Is there a batch mode or an API?

No. Checks run one at a time through the box on this page, and there is no public API on this route.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It is a web page with a text box, so any modern mobile browser runs it with nothing to install.

What happens when I use all 5 checks?

The tool returns a rate limit message and the allowance refills on a rolling 24 hour window, so the oldest run expires rather than everything resetting at midnight.

Does it work on languages other than English?

You can paste any language, but the pattern descriptions are most reliable in English and we make no claim about coverage in other languages.

Are you affiliated with Originality.ai, GPTZero or Copyleaks?

No. We have no affiliation with any of them and cannot predict what any of their tools will report about your text.

I was accused of using AI. What should I do?

Another score will not help you. Gather evidence of process instead: drafts, version history, notes and research, which show the work as it was built.

Read the signals, skip the score.

Paste a passage above. You get a description of what is in the writing, with no percentage attached and no claim about who wrote it.
