Markdown formatter

What the Markdown formatter does

This tool tidies the whitespace in a Markdown document without touching its syntax. Trailing spaces at the end of every line are trimmed, and runs of three or more blank lines are collapsed down to a clean two-line gap between sections. Every heading, every bold marker, every link stays exactly as written.

It runs in your browser. Paste Markdown, format it, copy the result. Nothing is uploaded, there's no account and no limit on how much you clean.

How it works

How to format Markdown in three steps

Nothing to configure.

Step 1
Paste your Markdown into the input box.
Step 2
Press Format Markdown. It runs instantly, on your device.
Step 3
Copy the tidied Markdown from the output box.

Precisely

What this formatter actually changes

Two things happen here, and only two: trailing whitespace at the end of every line is removed, and any run of three or more consecutive blank lines is collapsed down to exactly two, preserving a normal paragraph gap without leaving an oversized empty stretch in the middle of a document. Leading and trailing whitespace on the whole document is trimmed too.

This is a tidying pass on Markdown you already have, not a generator that adds structure to plain prose. If your source has no headings, no bold, no links, running it through this formatter won't add any: it will only clean up the spacing around whatever's already there.

Worth knowing

The trailing-space catch: Markdown's own line-break convention

Markdown has a specific convention where two trailing spaces at the end of a line force a hard line break inside a single paragraph, rather than being read as a new paragraph entirely. Because this formatter trims trailing whitespace from every line as one of its two jobs, it will remove exactly that signal if your source relies on it, silently turning an intentional line break into an ordinary soft wrap.

If your document depends on the two-space hard break convention anywhere, check those specific spots in the output after formatting. This is genuinely the one place where 'review the result before you rely on it' matters most for this tool.

Two different jobs

Formatting Markdown versus stripping it

This tool is for Markdown that's staying Markdown, going into a file, a repository, a CMS that renders it. The syntax survives untouched; only the whitespace around it changes.

If your destination can't render Markdown at all and you need plain text instead, that's a different tool's job. Use the Markdown stripper, which removes the syntax entirely rather than just tidying the spacing around it.

Why it matters

What messy Markdown whitespace actually causes

Trailing whitespace on a line is invisible in most editors but shows up as a change in every diff, a version control history cluttered with noise that has nothing to do with the actual content edited. A run of many blank lines in the middle of a document looks like a rendering bug once it hits a page, an unexplained gap that has no visible cause in the source.

Inconsistent spacing between sections also makes a document harder to scan in its raw form, in a code review, a pull request, or anywhere someone is reading the Markdown source directly rather than its rendered output.

Who uses it

Who uses a Markdown formatter, and when

Developers cleaning up a README, a changelog or documentation before a commit, especially after merging content from multiple contributors with inconsistent editor settings. Anyone maintaining a Markdown-based wiki or knowledge base uses it to keep whitespace consistent across many documents edited by different people over time.

It also comes up preparing Markdown for a static site generator, where extra blank lines or trailing spaces can produce small, hard-to-trace rendering quirks in the built output.

FAQ

Markdown formatter FAQ

Everything below is answered in full, nothing to click open.

How do I format Markdown to clean up whitespace?

Paste it into the box above and press Format Markdown. Trailing spaces are trimmed and extra blank lines collapsed, and the tidied result appears on the right.

Is the Markdown formatter free?

Yes, entirely free. No signup, no trial and no usage limit, since it runs in your browser.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Processing happens on your own machine in JavaScript. Nothing is sent over the network.

What's the difference between this and the Markdown stripper?

This keeps every Markdown symbol exactly as written and only tidies whitespace. The stripper removes the syntax entirely and returns plain text.

Does this convert plain text into Markdown?

No, it doesn't add headings, bold or any structure that isn't already there. It only cleans up the whitespace around Markdown that already exists in your input.

Does it change my headings, bold or links?

No, every heading marker, bold marker and link is kept exactly as written. Only whitespace, trailing spaces and extra blank lines, is affected.

Will it remove Markdown's two-space line break?

Yes, and this is the one thing to watch for. Trimming trailing whitespace removes those two spaces along with any other trailing space, turning an intentional hard break into a normal soft wrap.

How many blank lines does it collapse a run down to?

Three or more consecutive blank lines are collapsed down to exactly two, keeping a normal paragraph gap without an oversized empty stretch.

Does it fix heading levels or list formatting?

No, it doesn't restructure or validate your Markdown's structure. It only trims trailing whitespace and collapses excess blank lines.

Should I review the result before using it?

Yes, particularly for any place your source relied on the two-space hard break, since that's the one change this tool makes that isn't purely cosmetic.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, it works the same in any modern mobile browser.

Can I use it on a README before committing?

Yes, that's a common use, especially after merging edits from contributors with different editor whitespace settings.

Does it fix indentation in nested lists?

No, it doesn't restructure indentation. It only trims trailing whitespace at line ends and collapses excess blank lines.

Is there a batch mode or an API?

Not yet. For several documents, paste, format and copy each one for now.

Is it safe for confidential text?

Yes, nothing is transmitted or retained, so it's fine for drafts you haven't shared anywhere.

Why does trailing whitespace matter in version control?

It's invisible in most editors but shows up as a real change in a diff, cluttering a commit history with noise unrelated to the actual content edited.

Does it touch code blocks?

It trims trailing whitespace per line the same way throughout the document, so check fenced code blocks specifically if trailing spaces are meaningful in your code.

Will it add missing blank lines where I need them?

No, it only collapses excess blank lines down to two; it doesn't add spacing where there isn't any already.

Can this fix a document where blank lines look wrong when rendered?

If the cause is a large run of blank lines in the source, yes. If it's something else, like a heading level or list nesting issue, this formatter won't touch that.

Is this the same as a code formatter like Prettier?

No, it's a lighter, narrower pass focused specifically on trailing whitespace and blank-line runs, not a full syntax-aware Markdown formatter.
