Duplicate line remover

What the remove duplicate lines tool does

Paste a list or a block of text with repeated lines in it, and this tool returns one copy of each line, keeping only the first time it appears and dropping every repeat after that. The order the lines were originally in is preserved, so the fifth unique line in your input is still the fifth line in the output.

It runs in your browser. Paste, dedupe, copy. Nothing is uploaded, there's no account and no cap on how many lines you clean.

How it works

How to remove duplicate lines in three steps

Nothing to configure.

Step 1
Paste your list, one item per line, into the input box.
Step 2
Press Remove duplicates. It runs instantly, on your device.
Step 3
Copy the deduplicated list from the output box.

How duplicates are decided

Order-preserving, not sorted

This tool walks through your lines from top to bottom and keeps the first time it sees each one, discarding every later repeat. What comes out is in exactly the same order the unique lines appeared in going in; nothing gets rearranged alphabetically or by any other criterion.

That distinction matters if line order carries meaning, a chronological log, a sequence of steps, a list where the first mention is the one you actually want to keep. A tool that sorted first and deduplicated second would give you a technically correct set of unique lines in an order that no longer matches your original list.

What counts as a duplicate

Duplicates are matched exactly, including case

Two lines are treated as duplicates only if they are identical, character for character. 'Apples' and 'apples' are different lines to this tool, since the capital A makes them unequal strings, even though a human reading the list would probably call them the same item.

If you need duplicates caught regardless of capitalization, normalize the case first with the case converter, then dedupe. Running case conversion before deduplication is the right order: convert first, then remove repeats that only became identical after the conversion.

The usual surprise

Why two lines that look identical don't get merged

This is the most common reason someone runs this tool and finds a duplicate still sitting in the result. 'apples' and 'apples ' with a trailing space look completely identical on screen, but they are different strings, byte for byte, so an exact match sees them as two separate lines.

The same happens with a trailing tab, a stray carriage return left over from a Windows-to-Unix conversion, or any invisible character riding along at the end of a line. If duplicates are surviving a pass through this tool, run the whitespace minifier or the hidden character remover first to strip whatever's making visually identical lines actually different underneath.

Why it matters

What duplicate lines actually cause

A mailing list with a repeated address sends the same message to the same person twice. A CSV import with duplicate rows inflates a count that should reflect unique entries. A configuration file with a setting repeated on two lines can behave unpredictably depending on which parser reads it last.

In a word list, a keyword list or any data feeding an automated process, duplicates waste processing time at best and silently double-weight an entry at worst.

Who uses it

Who uses a duplicate line remover, and when

Anyone cleaning an email list, a customer database export, or a keyword list before it goes into a campaign tool uses this to get one entry per unique value. Developers deduplicating log lines, a list of file paths, or a set of test cases use it for the same reason.

It also comes up merging two lists that overlap, combining a subscriber export from two different sources and wanting exactly one copy of every address that appears in both.

FAQ

Remove duplicate lines FAQ

Everything below is answered in full, nothing to click open.

How do I remove duplicate lines from a list?

Paste the list into the box above and press Remove duplicates. The first occurrence of each line is kept, and repeats are dropped.

Is the remove duplicate lines tool free?

Yes, entirely free. No signup, no trial and no usage limit, since it runs in your browser.

Is my list uploaded anywhere?

No. Processing happens on your own machine in JavaScript. Nothing is sent over the network.

Does it keep the first or the last occurrence of a duplicate?

The first. The line's original position in your list is what gets kept; every later repeat of that exact line is dropped.

Does it sort the list?

No, order is preserved exactly as you pasted it in, aside from removed duplicates. It doesn't alphabetize or reorder anything.

Is it case sensitive?

Yes. 'Apples' and 'apples' are treated as two different lines because the capitalization makes them unequal strings.

Why is a line I thought was a duplicate still showing up twice?

It's most likely a trailing space, tab or invisible character on one of the two lines, making them different strings even though they look identical.

How do I remove case-insensitive duplicates?

Convert the text to one consistent case with the case converter first, then run the duplicate remover on the result.

Does it remove blank lines?

Blank lines are treated like any other line: only the first blank line is kept and later blank lines are removed as duplicates of it.

Can I use this on a long list?

Yes, there's no length cap. Performance depends on your own device rather than any limit we impose.

Does removing duplicates change the wording of each line?

No, the surviving lines are returned exactly as they were. Only whole repeated lines are removed.

Can it dedupe a CSV file?

It works on plain lines, so a simple line-per-row CSV can be deduplicated this way, but it treats each entire row as one string, not by a specific column.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, it works the same in any modern mobile browser.

What's the difference between this and a spreadsheet's remove duplicates?

A spreadsheet can dedupe by a specific column. This tool compares whole lines, which is the right fit for plain text lists rather than structured tables.

Is there a batch mode or an API?

Not yet. For several lists, paste, dedupe and copy each one for now.

Is it safe for confidential lists?

Yes, nothing is transmitted or retained, so it's fine for data you haven't shared anywhere.

Does whitespace at the start of a line matter too?

Yes, leading whitespace is part of the line just like trailing whitespace, so two lines differing only by leading spaces are treated as distinct.

Can I remove duplicates and sort alphabetically at the same time?

This tool removes duplicates only, keeping your original order. Sort the result separately afterward if you need it alphabetized too.

Does it handle Windows line endings correctly?

Yes, lines are split on carriage return and line feed combinations, so both Windows and Unix-style line endings are read correctly.

Why did my duplicate count not match what I expected?

Check for trailing whitespace or a stray invisible character on the lines that look identical; those make an exact match see them as different lines.

Dedupe your list in about four seconds.

Paste, remove duplicates, copy. Nothing to install, nothing leaving your browser.
