Whitespace minifier

What the whitespace minifier does

This tool finds every run of whitespace in your text, two or more spaces in a row, a tab, a mix of the two, or whitespace that spans a line break, and collapses each run down to a single space. It trims the very start and end of the result too, so the output has clean, single spacing throughout instead of ragged gaps.

It runs in your browser. Paste text, minify, copy. Nothing is uploaded, there's no account and no limit on how much you clean.

How it works

How to minify whitespace in text in three steps

Nothing to configure.

Step 1
Paste text with uneven spacing into the input box.
Step 2
Press Minify. It runs instantly, on your own device.
Step 3
Copy the evenly spaced result.

Collapsing, not deleting

This collapses runs to one space, it doesn't delete every space

There's an important difference between minifying whitespace and removing it. This tool takes any run of one or more whitespace characters and reduces it to exactly one regular space; it never removes the single space that's supposed to sit between two words. The result is still readable prose, just with consistent, tidy spacing.

If what you actually want is a string with no spaces at all, for a slug, a key or a field that rejects whitespace outright, that's a different job. Use the text space remover instead, which deletes every space rather than collapsing runs of them.

Worth knowing

This also collapses whitespace across line breaks

Because a run of whitespace can include a line break along with any spaces or tabs around it, minifying multi-paragraph text also joins those paragraphs onto a single line: the tool doesn't distinguish 'whitespace that happens to be a paragraph break' from 'whitespace that's just extra spaces'. If keeping paragraphs separate matters, run this one paragraph at a time, or use the line break remover and reinsert your own paragraph breaks afterward.

For text that's already a single line or a single paragraph with erratic internal spacing, none of this matters, the whole point is exactly what happens: uneven gaps become one consistent space throughout.

Where it comes from

Why text ends up with uneven spacing in the first place

Copying from a table, a PDF or certain rich-text editors often carries the original column alignment along as literal repeated spaces, since the source used spacing to line things up visually rather than any structural formatting. Text assembled programmatically from several pieces, a template with unfilled placeholders, a string built by concatenation, frequently ends up with doubled spaces where two fragments meet.

Manual editing adds its own share too: two people editing the same document over time tend to leave small inconsistencies, an extra space after a deleted word, a tab where a colleague used spaces.

Why it matters

What uneven whitespace actually breaks

Extra spaces inside a sentence rarely change how a reader understands it, but they do change how software reads it. A string comparison expecting single-spaced text fails against a double-spaced variant. A search index can treat 'word word' as a different phrase from 'word word'. Minified HTML, CSS and JSON specifically depend on collapsed whitespace to be genuinely smaller in file size, not just visually tidier.

In data exports, inconsistent spacing between fields or values is a common cause of a lookup or a join failing to match rows that should be identical.

Who uses it

Who uses a whitespace minifier, and when

Writers cleaning up text pasted from a table or a PDF, where the original layout left behind runs of spaces that now sit in the middle of a normal sentence. Developers tidying a config value, a log line or a data field where consistent single spacing matters for a downstream comparison.

Anyone preparing text for a system that treats a double space as meaningfully different from a single one uses this as a normalization step before that text goes anywhere further.

FAQ

Whitespace minifier FAQ

Everything below is answered in full, nothing to click open.

How do I collapse extra spaces in text?

Paste the text into the box above and press Minify. Every run of whitespace is collapsed to a single space, and the result appears on the right.

Is the whitespace minifier free?

Yes, entirely free. No signup, no trial and no usage limit, since it runs in your browser.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Processing happens on your own machine in JavaScript. Nothing is sent over the network.

Does it delete all the spaces?

No, it collapses runs of whitespace down to one space; it never removes the single space between two words. For deleting every space entirely, use the text space remover instead.

What's the difference between this and the text space remover?

This collapses multiple spaces into one and keeps readable spacing. The space remover deletes every space entirely, joining words together. Use this for tidying prose and the other for slugs, keys and fields that reject whitespace.

Does it collapse line breaks too?

Yes, a run of whitespace spanning a line break is collapsed the same way as a run of plain spaces, which joins the surrounding lines onto one.

Will it preserve my paragraph breaks?

No, paragraph breaks are a kind of whitespace too and get collapsed like everything else. Process paragraphs individually if you need to keep them separate.

Does it remove tabs?

Yes, a tab is whitespace, so a run containing one is collapsed to a single space along with any spaces around it.

Why does my pasted table have extra spaces in the middle of sentences?

The source used spacing to visually line up columns rather than real formatting, and that spacing carries over as literal repeated spaces once copied out.

Does minifying change my wording?

No, only whitespace is affected. Every word stays exactly as written.

Can I use this on code?

Be careful, whitespace is often meaningful in code, especially in Python and YAML. This tool is built for prose, not for anything where spacing carries syntax.

Does it trim leading and trailing whitespace too?

Yes, the very start and end of the result are trimmed, in addition to every internal run being collapsed.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, it works the same in any modern mobile browser.

Is there a batch mode or an API?

Not yet. For several documents, paste, minify and copy each one for now.

Is it safe for confidential text?

Yes, nothing is transmitted or retained, so it's fine for drafts you haven't shared anywhere.

Can it fix spacing in a CSV or data file?

It works on plain text lines, so simple cases work, though structured formats with meaningful whitespace should be checked carefully afterward.

Does it handle non-breaking spaces and other Unicode spaces?

It targets standard whitespace characters. For non-breaking, thin or ideographic spaces specifically, the text space remover's character coverage is broader.

Why is my multi-paragraph document now a single line?

Because minifying collapses whitespace across line breaks too, paragraph breaks get joined the same way extra spaces do.

What should I use to remove line breaks but keep single spacing between words?

The remove line breaks tool is built specifically for that job and reads more naturally for prose that's meant to become one paragraph.

Does it help before minifying JSON, CSS or HTML for production?

It's built for prose rather than syntax-sensitive formats. Use a dedicated minifier for code, since whitespace can be structurally meaningful there.
